Reality Check

I’m coming back down to reality after a spectacular birthday weekend. I partied! – Maybe a little too hard but it was my birthday. I’m refreshed today and ready for the week ahead.
I’ve been seeing a lot of girls wear ankle booties with skirts and dresses and decided to try the look for myself. This top is from American Eagle. It was a steal at only $4. Yes $4. I bought these booties from a shop in NY. Between all the street vendors and neat shops I can always find something great there. There is sometimes a stigma associated with hitting up the sales racks but I think sales are awesome. Without them I can honestly say that I wouldn’t have as much clothing as I do. Since it’s the end of the summer season you can find great sales at your local retailers.

Last week I mentioned this local up and coming jewelry designer. You can learn more about it at http://www.thechictherapy.bigcartel.com/.This wonderful necklace I’m wearing in this photo is from her line. The button earrings I wore last week are also from there.

I want to send a very special Happy Birthday message to my sister! It was great spending time with you on my bday and helping you celebrate yours over the weekend.

Ready for Work!

That’s really how I can describe my mindset this morning. I have a long day ahead of me. I put on this ladylike dress because I knew that I would be comfortable and  that I would feel good in it. Now I’m ready to attack the day.

I bought these earrings (which I love and only cost $10) at an event that I attended Friday night. I also won a necklace from the same designer. I will wear the necklace later this week and post information on the designer too. The jewelry line is relatively inexpensive but is stylish and can be worn with just about anything. I recently tried to make button jewelry and haven’t been able to execute it in a satisfactory way but after buying these earrings and examining them, I’ve come up with a few ideas. I foresee a future DIY project coming up.

Flower Power

I  hate that we are on the brink of cool weather and shorter days. It’s time to put away all the frilly pretty dresses…Or is it? if you’re like me and you are not ready to put away your Summer attire you can easily modify your outfits to be ready for Fall.  I wore this dress in the summer with sandals and bare legs. Now I’m wearing tights, shoes, and a sweater (not seen in these photos). I actually think the dress looks better worn this way. I like unexpectedly mixing and matching styles. You never know what type of look you can create. This is also a way to be conservative when you’re making purchases to update your Fall wardrobe.

This is another look that you can try to recreate.

Preppy Bohemian

Somehow I put together this combination without putting much thought into it. I started with the khaki skirt but felt that it was too rigid to pair with a simple button down shirt. I needed to add something to make it funky. I opted for this crinkled flowery top that I picked up at Daffy’s in New York. That store is amazing! They had the most fabulous sale (75% off already reduced items). I was frantic and had to be sure that I took advantage of this splendid shopping opportunity. I also scored these shoes while I was in New York too. They were too adorable to pass up and perfect for pounding the pavement in the city.

You can easily create a similar look. Pair a long billowy dress with a cardigan and a belt or even wear flared jeans with a shirt with print and a blazer. I think the preppy articles in these outfits will really pull together the look .

In the next few days I am going to post a few DIY projects I tried at home. Be sure to check my Various Finds page for updates.

Blast from the Past

I scored another thrifty find! In this dress I feel like a cross between a 1920s flapper and like I stepped out of (one of my favorite 80s films) Pretty in Pink. Either way this dress made me feel so feminine and pretty. I was loving the forgiving design of the dress. It doesn’t cling to my body but still flatters my shape. Heels were a must because the dress was so long that I needed extra length. These Sam and Libby shoes were very comfortable but run a little big. I paired the dress with accessories that I picked up at a Swap over the summer. I’ve only been to one Swap event but I would definitely attend more. Here’s how it goes. You bring clothes to donate for the Swap and then you have an opportunity to pick up items that you want that were also brought by other swappers. You can even find new items at these events too. This is a great way to update your wardrobe without it being a burden to your wallet. On Thursday, September 29th, the 2nd Sip and Swap will be held at the Microsoft Nerd Center in Cambridge.
